Darkwood Ale – Federal Hotel, Bellingen, NSW (AUS)

I was really looking forward to tasting this locally made brew after an early family Christmas in Bellingen. We’d spent the day at a “secret spot”, up in the hills, swinging into the cool waters of one the Bellinger tributaries and being deafened by cicadas.

Brewed by the Bellingen Brewing Company and supped in the wonderful Federal Hotel in Bellingen, the Darkwood Ale was full of promise. Cloudy chestnut in colour and slightly Boddingtons in flavour, I found it a little disappointing and in need of more fizz. It didn’t hold it’s head and was a little bitter (in a bad way). Perhaps it was the end of a barrel or the pipes were in need of a clean but I’m sure I’ll taste a better Darkwood Ale on my next visit to Bellingen.
