As one great Wilde once said, “work is the curse of the drinking classes”, well here’s different Wilde that is a curse on no one. I was somewhat sceptical when I picked up Wilde – Gluten Free Pale Ale, after all, gluten is like the Higgs Boson, it’s been in around for ages but no one knew of its existence until recently.
So, what is beer like without that all important gluten? Well, I’m happy to report that this particular brew is light and refreshing, straw-coloured with big fresh bubbles. As with all good pale ales, there’s plenty of hops and fruit on the nose and tongue. I detect elderflower champagne and blackcurrant jelly babies (you know, the ones with the sugar dusting?). Did I miss the gluten? No. Hell, I don’t know why they go putting gluten in all the other beers! This Wilde One also has no preservatives, no artificial flavours and no added sugar. It would seem less is more.
This is a real winner, especially for Coeliac sufferers. Drink cold with a gluten-free sausage in a gluten-free roll.
