HSD Strong Cornish Ale – St Austell Brewery (KER)

A pint of ‘Hicks’ or ‘HSD’ is something to be treated with respect. An abbreviation of ‘Hicks Special Draught’ (after the brewery’s founder, Walter Hicks), HSD is mighty meaty brew. A deep reddish-brown in colour, it’s packed with winter flavours, perhaps a touch of Christmas cake and would go well with steak or a hearty pie.

Beware though, HSD (or ‘High Speed Diesel’, as initiates know it) is to taken only as prescribed and should not be drunk when operating heavy machinery. It belies its 5% abc and packs a much bigger punch.
